I’m just wrapping up a couple of crazy trips that had me flying 40,000 miles in 10 days. I’m exhausted, as this has been an insane couple of weeks of travel even by my own usual crazy standards. On the plus side, I was able to spend a few days in Yerevan, Armenia, which I really enjoyed. It’s a cool, lively city, with (mostly) friendly people and great food. I’m also happy that I had the chance to experience Emirates’ new first class and Qatar’s new Qsuites.

On the points & travel front, this week we saw Alaska and Virgin America adopt a single operating certificate, Hilton Honors announced some major changes to their program, AAdvantage sent out some targeted status offers, and more.

With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:

Qatar Airways Qsuites Business Class: Impressions From My First Flight

Hello from Doha! I just got off the 12 hour flight from New York in Qatar Airways’ new Qsuites business class, which the airline introduced last year. This is Qatar Airways’ new business class suites with doors, for which they have the slogan “First in Business.” They’re essentially making the claim that this is a first class product at business class prices. Yaroslav shared a review of his experience with Qsuites between London and Doha last June, and in this post I wanted to share my initial impressions.

So, how was Qsuites? Is this actually a revolutionary business class experience, or just a mediocre seat that they slapped a door on? Keep in mind how efficient this configuration is, as they managed to install these seats in the same space as the old business class cabin without reducing the seat count.

Well, I’ve gotta say, Qsuites is an astoundingly good business class product. This has to be the most innovative and well thought out business class seat I’ve ever sat in.

Is Alaska Airlines Losing Their Mojo?

Alaska Airlines has long been special as far as US airlines go.

They’ve been viewed as Seattle’s “hometown airline,” and while other airlines have been devaluing their frequent flyer programs, cutting back on their inflight product, and introducing basic economy, Alaska has kept doing their own thing, which I respect.

But Alaska also faces some real challenges.

What To Do When You Receive Your Chase Sapphire Reserve Card

I’ve written extensively about why the Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card is a fantastic card that’s worth getting. In this post I wanted to look at what you should do once you’ve applied for the card, received it, and activated it.

The good news is that there’s not a huge learning curve in terms of maximizing the benefits of the card, so there’s not that much to know. So in no particular order, here’s what you should do once you’ve activated your Chase Sapphire Reserve℠ Card:

I hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

Over the years I've had my fair share of empty first class cabins. I'd estimate that I've probably been on close to 10 international first class flights where I was the only person in the cabin. It goes without saying that it's a real treat when that…

Hello from Colombo! I just finished taking two back-to-back redeyes on Swiss and Air India, and it has been an interesting couple of days, to put it mildly. On the plus side, I'm happy to have made it here more or less on schedule. There was limited…

I spent the entire week on the ground with family celebrating both Christmas and (shortly) New Year's. So while this is the first week in a long time that I didn't fly, I instead spent that time planning a bunch of travel, which I've outlined on the…

I'm spending the week with my family not flying for once, which I'm quite happy about. However, come the first of January I have some big international trips planned, which I'm looking forward to as well. However, it's nice not to be jetlagged for once.…

I returned to the US from Mexico City earlier in the week, though unfortunately caught a nasty cold on my last day in Mexico, and have been sick ever since. This got in the way of an exciting review trip that I had planned for this past week, which I…

For the past several years I’ve been participating in the SPG Stars program, which has taken me to some pretty awesome places. I love the SPG Amex Credit Card, and it’s one of the cards I’ve had in my wallet for the longest amount of time. It was one…

A couple months ago I went to Alaska for a weekend. (It was the cheapest way to complete my Delta Platinum Medallion challenge.) I didn't realize how cold and snowy it'd be in October! But I made the most of it. I just needed a quiet, comfortable place…

We arrived in Santiago at 9:40PM, while our connecting flight was at 11:40PM, so we had a decent connection time. However, the transit process ended up taking longer than expected. I found the signage in the airport to be bad, and as we made our way…

Our flight from Easter Island to Santiago was departing at 2:55PM, and the hotel dropped us off at the airport at 12:40PM, which seemed awfully early. To enter the terminal you had to put your bag through an x-ray, though the person manning the belt…

I'm really lucky when it comes to the punctuality of the flights I take. No, my flights aren't always on-time, but off the top of my head the last overnight flight delay I recall was on an Etihad flight from Incheon to Abu Dhabi in 2014. I've certainly…

British Airways has first class fare sales with some frequency. While British Airways' first class isn't great (I've often called it the world's best business class, but I'm not even sure that's accurate anymore), flying British Airways first class is…
